DOH Launches first Rural Surgery Program in Calabarzon

The first rural surgery program that will provide surgical services to the underserved communities and will also serve as surgical education and training facility for medical students was launched yesterday, June 11, 2021, at the Mabini Community Hospital (MCH) in Mabini, Batangas.

The project known as CO-OPERASYON Rural Surgery Program is a pilot program of the local government of Mabini, Batangas, the University of the Philippines- Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) Department of Surgery and DOH-CALABARZON.

According to UP- PGH, Director Gerardo D. Legaspi the program is necessary to help those who needs surgical operations for their treatment who resides in far-flung areas.

“Kami na ang pupunta at magbibigay ng serbisyo sa tao at hindi na namin sila aantayin pa na magpunta sa amin. Evryone has a right to health and it is our duty in the health sector to give them that right,” Legaspi stated.

He also added that the program will also help surgery trainees complete their required cases for training by rendering essential surgical services to the community hospital.

“Initially, UP-GH will be providing minor surgical operations at MCH and for patients needing major surgery, we will send them immediately to PGH,” Legaspi added.

UP-PGH will deploy three (3) resident surgeons that will conduct surgical operation at the MCH.

Erstwhile Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo, also one of the guests during the launching and moa signing stated that the CO-OPERASYON Rural Surgery Program will eventually provide internal medicine, surgery, pedia and ob-gyne services.

“Napakaimportante na lahat ng ating stakeholders ay magkaroon ng iisang layunin upang maisakatuparan ang isang proyektong gaya nito na magbibigay ng buhay at pag-asa sa mga pasyenteng nangangailangan ng operasyon upang sila ay makapagpagamot at makapamuhay pa ng maayos.”

“With the leadership and support of UP-PGH, we can be assured that this project will be sustained to help all people requiring various kinds of surgery in the distant communities will be provided for and taken care of,” he emphasized.

OIC Regional Director Dr. Paula Paz Sydiongco said that an initial fund of Php10 million was allocated by the regional office for the purchase of medical equipment and other medical supply including facility for surgery,

“Sa ngayon, habang wala pang surgical ward ang community hospital ay gagamitin muna ang mga available rooms upang maumpisahan ang proyekto. Habang inaayos pa natin ang facility upang makapag-accommodate ng maraming mga pasyente, pansamantala munang mga minor surgical operations ang gagawin dito.”

“All surgical operations to be conducted is free of charge, so patients need not worry about paying anything. Fees will be covered by PHILHEALTH, UP-PGH and DOH-CALABARZON.,” she added.

Sydiongco also thanked the local government of Mabini for their support to the CO-OPERASYON Rural Surgery Program.

The Mabini Community Hospital is a local government hospital with 18-bed capacity and opened on July 1, 2020.
